Virgin Pina Colada Recipe – Pine Colada is a Mocktail drink made out of fresh pineapple juice and coconut milk. It also happens to be most popular drink of Puerto Rica ( as good to qualify as national drink). This virgin recipe does not include any alcohol, however nothing precludes one to add Rum and make a cocktail of the same.

What is Piña colada
Piña colada also written as pina colada is drink from Puerto Rico and hence you can expect Caribbean flavours in it. Piña means “Pineapple” and “colada” means strained in Spanish, and hence the name. Its is more of a cocktail drink and contains rum in its original form, however for the people who do not drink alcohol, a non-alcoholic version was invented and contains no rum.
Origin of Piña colada
According to wiki, this drink was first given by a pirate, Roberto Cofresí to his crew to infuse enthusiasm. The drink contained pineapple, white rum and coconut, however this drink lost its course with the death of pirate. It came back in global prominence with Puerto Rico claiming pina colada as its official drink.

Pro tips for best pina colada
- Adding Simple sugar syrup is optional and will depend upon how much sweet you want your drink to be.
- You can also add 2 tablespoon of vanilla ice-cream to make it more creamier and it also tastes yum.
- If you don’t want your drink to be pulpy, just avoid adding fresh pineapple pieces.
- I have used Monin’s cocktail syrup in my recipe just to give them extra flavour, if you don’t have this syrup available, you can skip it and the drink will taste same without it as well.
- Serve in a chilled glass.
- Where possible, use fresh pineapple juice. The sweetness level varies from pineapple to pineapple, hence adjust sugar as per taste.
Cocktail Version
To make cocktail, you need 25cl of white rum.
Add the rum in the blender or shaker and shake it. Rest recipe remains the same.
Serving suggestion
Serve this pina colada chilled by garnishing with pineapple chunk, you may add a hint of lime for nice zesty flavour (I normally like doing it).
