I remember those days from my childhood when we do not had oven at home and finding cake was confined to a confectionary / bakery shop. I used to pester my parents to get me this tutti frutti cake, and getting it would be a mega treat for me. So badly miss those childhood memories.
What is tutti frutti
Candied raw papaya or raw water-melon shell (green part) is called tutti frutti. It is made by chopping raw papaya (or water melon shell) to small bits and dipping in sugar syrup. These are then colored and dried.

Where to buy tutti frutti
You can get tutti frutti in any grocery store in India. If in UK or US, you may get it in a big Indian grocery store or Amazon. You can make them at home too.
In my recipe I do not prepare tutti frutties from raw papaya, rather I buy these from grocery store and preserve time and energy to focus on better things like making this cake 😉
Now I make this Tutti Fruti cake now and again for my family. Ironically my love for this specific cake still remains the same immaterial of age 🙂
This tutti frutti cake is super hit with kids due to these colorful cherries / tutti frutti. I was super excited when I recently offered this cake to 4 year old daughter of my friend. She totally loved it.

Notes
- Baking the cake at right temperature is the key for a nice fluffy and soft cake.
- I have used caster sugar for making cake which is a very fine form of sugar. So if you using other sugar like granulated sugar, please do adjust the amount of sugar to avoid it being too sweet.
- Don’t leave the mixture out for long otherwise the cake won’t rise and be less fluffy.
- Don’t open the oven door often as this has adverse impact on the temperature of oven.
