Why air fried chicken : A healthier love story
My partner is a die-hard chicken lover—the kind who dreams of crispy drumsticks and perfectly spiced wings. But let’s face it, deep-fried indulgence isn’t the healthiest habit. I found myself on a mission. How could I offer him his beloved crispy chicken without the guilt? How could I do it without the grease and hours spent in the kitchen? Enter the air fryer—a game changer for foodies and health-conscious home cooks alike.
Here’s the thing about air-fried chicken: it’s the perfect marriage of crunch and health. By using just a fraction of the oil, you get chicken that’s crispy on the outside. It is juicy on the inside and packed with flavor. No one misses the extra grease, and my partner couldn’t believe it wasn’t deep-fried.
What I love most is how quick and easy it is. With a simple marinade (hello, yogurt and spices!) and about 20 minutes in the air fryer, you’ve got a plate of golden, mouthwatering chicken ready to devour. It’s faster than ordering takeout and doesn’t leave your kitchen smelling like a fryer.
Plus, air frying keeps things lighter. He can enjoy his favorite chicken dishes without worrying about overloading on unhealthy fats. There is also reduced mess with no splattering oil. You don’t have greasy pans to scrub, making it a win-win for both health and convenience.
Since we started making air-fried chicken at home, it’s become a go-to for weeknight dinners. It’s also perfect for date nights and even meal prep. The air fryer lets me serve up his favorite comfort food with all the crunch, flavor, and love—minus the guilt. If you crave fried chicken and want a quick, healthier option, you should trust me. This is the recipe to try.
What to do if you don’t have an air fryer – Use your oven
If you don’t have an air fryer, don’t worry—you can still make crispy and juicy chicken legs in your oven. Here’s how:
1. Preheat the Oven: Heat your oven to 200°C (400°F). Preheating is crucial for even cooking and achieving that crispy texture.
2. Use a Wire Rack: Start by placing a wire rack on a baking tray. Then, arrange the marinated chicken legs on the rack. The wire rack allows hot air to circulate, mimicking the air fryer effect and keeping the chicken crispy all around.
3. Bake: Roast the chicken in the oven for 20-25 minutes. Flip the chicken halfway through and brush with a little oil to ensure even browning.
4. Finish Under the Grill (Optional): For extra crispiness, switch to the grill/broil setting for the last 3-5 minutes. Keep an eye on it to prevent burning.
This method delivers delicious results. It may take slightly longer. However, the flavor and texture will still wow your taste buds!
Ingredients for crispy air fried chicken
- 4 Chicken Legs: The stars of the show! These meaty beauties bring the juicy bites; without them, this recipe is basically a yoga class for yogurt.
- 2 tbsp Yogurt: The creamy magician that tenderizes chicken while making the marinade smooth enough to cling. Think of it as the spa treatment for your chicken.
- 1 tbsp Ginger Garlic Paste: The dynamic duo that punches up flavor and ensures your chicken isn’t basic. It’s like adding personality to your dish!
- 1 tsp Salt: The ultimate flavor amplifier—no salt, no soul. Enough said.
- 1/2 tsp Red Chilli Powder: A little kick to spice things up. It won’t set your mouth on fire but will add a fiery charm.
- 1 tsp Coriander Powder: Earthy, aromatic, and necessary to give the dish that “I’m an fancy recipe” vibe.
- 1/2 tsp Turmeric Powder: The golden glow-getter, adding color, anti-inflammatory benefits, and a subtle earthy taste. Chicken gets a tan; you get bonus health points!
- 1 tsp Kebab Masala: The MVP of marinade mixes. It’s like a secret weapon that makes people wonder, “What’s in this?!”
- 1/3 tsp Dried Mint Powder: A tiny but mighty addition for a fresh and herbaceous zing. It’s the culinary plot twist you didn’t know you needed.
- 1 tbsp Lemon Juice: The zesty brightener that balances flavors and keeps things fresh. Also, it makes the chicken feel fancy.
- 3 tbsp Oil: The crispy-making liquid gold. Chicken loves it, air fryers adore it, and it’s essential for that drool-worthy finish.
Why are they important? These ingredients aren’t just random. They work together like a well-rehearsed boy band. They harmonize flavors, tenderize chicken, and deliver that perfect crispy edge. This combination will make you rethink fried food forever.

Method to make crispy air fried chicken legs
Prepare Chicken: Wash the chicken legs and make small cuts in them. Set aside.
Make Marinade: In a mixing bowl, combine the yogurt and ginger garlic paste. Add the turmeric powder, red chili powder, and coriander powder. Include the salt and kebab masala. Mix well, then stir in the lemon juice and 1 tablespoon of oil.
Marinate Chicken: Coat the chicken legs thoroughly with the marinade. Let them rest for about 10-15 minutes to absorb the flavors.
Preheat Air Fryer: Set your air fryer to 190°C and allow it to preheat for a few minutes.
Roast Chicken: Place the marinated chicken legs on the air fryer tray. Roast for 5-7 minutes.
Brush with Oil: Brush the chicken legs with a little oil on both sides. Turn them over and continue to roast for another 10-15 minutes until they are golden brown and crispy.
Serve: Your crispy air fryer chicken legs are ready to serve! Enjoy them with a side of your favourite dipping sauce or salad for a complete meal.
Pro Tips for crispy air fried chicken
1. Pat the Chicken Dry: Before marinating, ensure the chicken legs are patted dry with a kitchen towel. Dry chicken = better marinade absorption. Think of it as prepping them for their spicy spa day.
2. Marinate Like You Mean It: Let the chicken soak in the marinade for at least 30 minutes. Better yet, leave it overnight in the fridge. The longer they mingle, the deeper the flavors. No rushed relationships here!
3. Preheat the Air Fryer: Don’t skip preheating—it ensures even cooking and that golden, crispy skin. It’s like warming up the stage before the main performance.
4. Don’t Overcrowd the Basket: Give your chicken legs some space to crisp up. Overcrowding = soggy chicken, and nobody wants that.
5. Flip for Crisp: Turn the chicken legs halfway through cooking. Brush them with a little oil. This ensures maximum crispiness on all sides. It’s like giving both sides equal love.
6. Check the Temperature: Use a meat thermometer to ensure the chicken’s internal temp hits 75°C (165°F). Safe chicken is happy chicken.
7. Rest Before Serving: Let the chicken rest for a few minutes before serving to lock in the juices. Trust me, patience tastes better!
8. Experiment with Spices: Feel adventurous? Add smoked paprika, garam masala, or even a dash of cumin for a flavor twist.
Follow these tips, and your air-fried chicken legs will be the ultimate crispy, juicy, guilt-free treat!
FAQs about this air fried chicken recipe
1. Can I use chicken thighs or wings instead of legs?
Absolutely! Just adjust the cooking time based on the size. Thighs may need a few extra minutes, while wings will cook faster.
2. Do I need to marinate the chicken overnight?
Not necessarily, but the longer, the better! If you’re short on time, a quick 30-minute marinade will still pack flavor.
3. Can I make this recipe without an air fryer?
Yes! Use a conventional oven at 200°C (400°F). Place the chicken on a wire rack and bake for about 25-30 minutes, flipping halfway through.
4. What if I don’t have kebab masala?
No worries! Substitute with garam masala or a mix of ground cumin, paprika, and black pepper for a similar flavor profile.
5. Can I skip the oil?
You can, but brushing a little oil on the chicken helps achieve that irresistible crispy texture. Your air fryer deserves a little help!
6. How do I know the chicken is cooked?
Use a meat thermometer to check the internal temperature—it should reach 75°C (165°F). No thermometer? Pierce the thickest part; the juices should run clear.
7. Can I freeze marinated chicken?
Yes, marinate the chicken, place it in a freezer-safe bag, and freeze. Thaw overnight in the fridge before air frying.

Pair them with a fresh salad, roasted veggies, or even some garlic butter naan for a complete meal!
