Mutton Chops Recipe – When you think of non-vegetarian starters, one thing that crosses mind is soft, tender Lamb Chops. Quick and easy to cook, lamb chops have tender, juicy meat, which is best served hot. It tastes so scrumptious that, you won’t realise it could be so easy to make it. You can make it in Oven (Oven Lamb Chops), or on Tawa (Flat Pan). I am sharing both the options here. For mutton lovers, you can make Mutton Chops following the same recipe, and you have your favourite chops ready at home.

What are lamb chops
Lamb chops are the cuts of lamb from the ribs of of lamb. These are expensive part of lamb, but are undeniably tender and delicious. These chops normally cooked individually, either in an oven, grill, bbq or on tawa. When you cook, the whole lot of chops together, its called rack of lamb.
What are mutton chops
Cuts from the ribs of Goat (and sometimes sheep), is called mutton chops.
Method of cooking lamb chops
You can make lamb or mutton chops in oven, tawa, bbq or grill. I will try to explain the process for oven, tawa and bbq here.
The key part of a succulent mutton or lamb chop is marination. Longer you can leave the chops to marinate, better these chops will taste. I recommend at least 8 hours of marination for great taste. In my recipe I have used double marination.
- Wash the chops and keep them in a colander so that all the water drains out.
- Now in a mixing bowl, add coriander powder, red chilli powder, salt, turmeric powder, ginger garlic paste, lemon juice, vinegar and mix thoroughly.
- Now put the lamb chops in the bowl and cover them with this paste with the help of your hand. Let this marinade for an hour.
- Slit the onion lengthwise and deep fry them in hot oil. Once onion is brown, take them out on a kitchen towel and let this cool.
- Add dried mint leaves, yogurt, garam masala to the lamb chops. Also crush the fried onions with the help of your hand and add it as well.
- Mix this properly so that the lamb chops are evenly coated with the marinade. Cover the bowl with cling film and keep it in fridge for at least 8 hours or overnight.
Different ways of cooking lamb chops
To cook lamb chops in oven
Pre-heat the oven for 10 minutes at 180 degree. Place the lamb chops in a baking tray and brush them with little oil. Keep the tray in oven for 30 minutes. After first 15 minutes, turn them and again brush them with little oil so that they can cook from both sides.
To cook lamb or mutton chops on tawa
Keep the tawa on medium heat and put little oil and then place the chops. Cook them till they are soft and succulent while regularly turning in between.
Making lamb or mutton chops on bbq
Ensure barbecue is very hot. Now place the lamb chops on the hot portion of bbq and keep turning every 2-3 minutes adding oil by brush. If you like lamb chops well done, then keep turning the chops till you see the chops are well done.
Pro Tips for Lamb or Mutton chops recipe
- Always use fresh young spring lambs for juicy lamb chops. Same applies of you making mutton chops.
- Make sure that you are constantly turning the chops on both sides, so that the meat is cooked from both sides properly.
- Depending on your own taste, you can decide if you like rare or well done meat. Use a pointed thing like fork to check how well the meat is cooked. Do not touch with bare hands, meat will be hot.
- Marinade the meat for 8 hours or longer for best taste.

Storing suggestion
Wrap any left over lamb chops in an aluminium foil under refrigeration for up to 2 days. For re-heating, take it out of foil, sprinkle a bit of oil and use tawa / flat skillet to re-heat on medium heat. If using microwave, sprinkle a bit of water and heat on medium heat for 2 minutes.
Serving suggestion
Serve hot lamb chops with lemon and onion. You can also serve green salad with these lamb chops.

Ingredients
First Marinade
- 1.5 Kg Lamb Chops In this case, 15 pieces
- 1 tsp Coriander Powder
- 1 tsp Red Chilli Powder
- 1 tsp Salt
- 1/3 tsp Turmeric Powder

- 1/2 tbsp Lemon Juice
- 1/3 tsp White Vinegar

- 1.5 tbsp Yogurt
- 1.5 tbsp Dried Mint Leaves
- 1/3 tsp Garam Masala Powder
- Oil For brushing

Notes
- You can cook this on bbq as well. First place them on higher heat for 10 minutes and then on lower heat for 20 minutes. Roast them till lamb is cooked from all sides properly.
- You can enjoy these with chutney / sauce of your choice or raw onion rings.
- You can marinate them for little longer as well like for 24-36 hours, but minimum 8 hours is necessary.

What temperature u kept the lamb chops in oven. and also how much time you took.
Hi Sunita, temp used is 180 deg C, time taken is 25-30mins. Don’t forget to turn the chops after 15mins
