Soak chana overnight, and then you can get this protein rich snack ready in minutes. I still remember my childhood days when my mom used to give overnight soaked chickpeas to me and my brother in morning, thanks to its protein content.

What is chana chaat

This chana chat is a great lunch box meal for kids, simply soak chickpeas, boil it (or can skip if you don’t liked boiled ones), top up with onion, boiled potatoes, tomatoes and lemon juice, that is it! Of course you can add other veggies too like beetroot, cucumber, avocado, etc.

The unique combination of Chickpea with crunchy onion, soft tomatoes, tangy lemon, with added chillies gives this snack a lovely taste…ummm am already getting watery mouth.

Black chana has english name as “garbanzo beans”, it contains about 270 Calories in one cup, less than 5 grams of total fat, 15 grams of protein (30% of required daily intake for an adult).

How to make black chana chaat


Recipe to make this black chana chaat or chickpea salad is super simple. Take a bowl. Now mix the boiled chickpeas along with chopped tomatoes, cucumber, reddish, green chillies, chaat masala, salt, and black pepper. You can add other fresh veggies as per your taste, such as beetroot, avocado, etc.

Pro Tips

  • Do not mix veggies in advance. Mix when you ready to serve.
  • A hint of lemon does magic to the taste.
  • To get the boiled chana, soak the chana for 6-8 hours in enough water. Then pressure cook them for 3-4 whistle. Once the pressure is released, drain the water and use these boiled chana as per the recipe. Make sure chana is soft but still in shape and not mashed.
  • You can keep the chickpeas boiled in advance, doing so will save your time.

Variations of this chana chaat

  • You can use not boiled but soaked version of chickpeas.
  • You can use white chickpeas, instead of black.
  • Soaked moong daal, can also be used instead of chickpeas.

Ingredients
  

  • 3 Cup Boiled Black Chana / Chickpea
  • 1 Onion Large Size – Finely Chopped
  • 2 Tomatoes Medium Size – Finely Chopped
  • 1 Cucumber Small Size – Finely Chopped
  • 8 Reddish Small Sized – Grated
  • 2 Green chillies Chopped
  • 2 Tablespoon Fresh Coriander Leaves Chopped
  • 1 Teaspoon Black Salt
  • 1 Teaspoon Chaat Masala
  • 1 Teaspoon Roasted cumin powder
  • Salt As Per Taste
  • 2 Tablespoon Lemon Juice
  • 1 Teaspoon Red Chilli Powder Optional

Instructions
 

  • In a large mixing bowl, add all the ingredients including the chana / chickpeas and mix well.

  • Garnish with Chopped Coriander leaves and serve.

Notes

  • To get the boiled chana, soak the chana for 6-8 hours in enough water. Then pressure cook them for 3-4 whistle. Once the pressure is released, drain the water and use these boiled chana as per the recipe.
  • Here at my place we get small red Radish, round in shape.  I have used them in my recipe, if you have white long ones, use half of it. You can either grate or finely chop it.
  • You can make this chaat without boiling the chana as raw chickpea/chana chaat. That too taste awesome. Similarly you can use raw moong sprouts too for this recipe to make moong sprout chaat.
